The Magistrate Judge, sitting in Lilongwe Magistrates court Judge Viva Nyimba has on Thursday, 19 November 2020 ordered the release of Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary, describing the arrest as unlawful and against laws of Malawi.

In his ruling, Nyumba highlighted the arrest was illegal, as Malawi did not issue any no warrant of arrest for the couple.

He said the court looked at the legality of arrest and not what happened in South Africa.

The court has therefore ordered an immediate release of Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary Bushiri with no conditions attached.

Bushiri who is a leader of the Enlighten Christian Gathering (ECG) and his wife handed themselves over to police in Area 30, Lilongwe, yesterday following their flee from South Africa.

In South Africa the Bushiris are facing fraud and money laundering charges amounting to over R100 million and will face additional charges after contravening strict bail conditions after he was held in police custody by South Africa law enforcement.
